Kia ora — I’m Meighan, also known as Legally Mum.
I’m a 24-year-old solo mum to a 4-year-old boy, a law graduate, and a government employee living in Aotearoa. I became pregnant at 19, during my first semester of law school. Some people assumed that would be the end of my degree — but instead, it became the beginning of a much bigger story.
I studied full time. I worked full time. I raised my son.
There were tears, triumphs, missed milestones, and massive wins.
It wasn’t easy — but it was mine. And I made it.
Why I Started Legally Mum
This blog is a space to tell the truth about what it means to be a young mum navigating professional ambition, parenting pressures, and personal growth in Aotearoa.
You’ll find stories about:
- Life as a solo mum
- Surviving (and graduating from) law school with a baby
- Working in government as a young woman from outside the typical mould
- Reflecting on law — not just the legal system, but the rules we’re told to live by
- Finding identity and purpose when you’re balancing everything at once
Whether you’re a young parent, law student, policy nerd, or just figuring things out — you’re welcome here.
What You’ll Get Here
I write honestly, with humour, heart, and a bit of legal insight. I don’t pretend to have it all together — but I believe in the value of sharing the messy middle as well as the milestones.
This is more than a blog. It’s a space to rewrite the story people love to tell about young mums — and tell it on our own terms.
Thanks for being here.
Let’s break stereotypes — one post at a time.
